"For as long as I can remember I have associated well-dressed people with power. After all it's pretty much conditioned in our mind. Just look at the TV-shows set in an office environment. Who usually have the best suit? The boss."
I used to dress pretty sloppy. Baggy t-shirts were a must, and you can't have a careless look without the oversized jeans. Of course at the time I did enjoy it and I actually thought it looked good. Then something happened. A moment of truth. Being in a wheelchair, you sometimes have to face ignorant people who, usually not on purpose, treat you with a disparaging attitude. I can't say it has happened to me too many times, but it has happened and when it does it kind of sucks. I remember one time, right after a belittling comment, I thought to myself: What can I do to change this? The answer was simple. Dress sharply. So I did. I bought myself a tailored suit just to see how it would benefit me. I can honestly say it has made a huge impact. Suddenly people treated me with a lot more respect and dignity. I was no longer just a guy in a wheelchair. Random people actually stepped forward giving me compliments for how I dressed. It honestly was a magical feeling. That was how I noticed the power of dressing well.
As we all know, first impressions says a lot. Even if we don't want to be judgmental, our mind subconsciously reacts to make an opinion. An easy step to deflect negative judgments is to dress well. Now some may say that it shouldn't have to be this way. You shouldn't have to avoid judgments. While I wholeheartedly agree with that, the fact is they exist in this world. So why not use a trick that will decrease a negative image of you and at the same time enhance your self-confidence? It’s worth a thought and we will discuss this more in later posts!
I recently bought this great looking double breasted suit from a company called EP Custom Clothing. They make custom suits, belts, shoes and shirts. Basically everything you could need. All you need to do is send them your measurements and you’re done. Voila, you got yourself a great suit! Since I live in Sweden and they are based in the USA one might think it could be hard getting the measurements right. Luckily, Ethan Allen Parrish who is the owner of the company answered all the questions I had. It’s always interesting to see the results of custom clothing and I really dig the look of this one. It goes really well with our Helvin Classic Black.
That’s pretty much all for this post.
